For the first tasting of our quest, we tried a plain pie at Manhattan Pizza in Stony Brook, Long Island, New York. You can pretty much assume that all of our pizza will come from places on Long Island, because we're not going on road trips to find pizza.
Before I start, here's out rating system:
No stars = Very bad
* = Bad
** = Okay
*** = Average
**** = Very Good
***** = Fabulous
Now, on to the pizza
Cheese: The cheese had good flavor, but was nothing spectacular. Regular mozzarella. ***
Crust: It wasn't horrible, but not great. The crust seemed under done; it was chewy and the pizza tended to flop over. It was very thin in the middle, but kind of thick around the edge, which I actually liked better. To be fair, they may have taken the pizza out of the oven a little too soon because we were sitting in the pizzeria waiting for it. **
Sauce: A finely textured tomato sauce. A little sweet, but not a lot of seasoning. We think the sauce could have used some salt and herbs. ***
Ratios: A bit too much cheese, a bit to little sauce. **
Bottom Line: It wasn't a bad pizza, and I wouldn't avoid getting pizza from this place, but it wasn't spectacular. 10/20 stars
